What happened

The Université de Montréal announced the creation of its first philanthropic AI chair for cardiovascular care. The chair, named Serge-Montplaisir and Micheline-Pelletier AI Chair in AI and cardiovascular care, is funded by a 1.5 million dollar gift from philanthropic professors and an additional 750,000 dollars from the Institute of Cardiology of Montreal Foundation. It aims to develop AI tools to analyze medical exams more quickly and accurately to help cardiologists assess risks and guide clinical decisions.

Why it matters

The effort positions the university as a leader in applying AI to heart health and aims to integrate AI into hospital practice to benefit patients.

The Université de Montréal says the new chair will put AI at the service of prevention, screening, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. It aims to create tools that analyze medical exams with speed and accuracy to aid doctors in risk assessment and clinical decisions. The goal is to move AI from theory into hospital practice to benefit patients.

Beyond scientific advances, the chair will foster training and collaboration with clinical partners to prepare a new generation of researchers at the crossroads of AI and cardiology and to develop decision-support tools.
